Historical residence and restaurant
Abruzzo has a jewel in a little village called Carunchio in the
province of Chieti. Driving past the area on the main highway along the
Trigno river, one would never expect to find such an exquisite palace
hidden in the hills of the Comunità Montana near the seaside town of Vasto.Originally constructed by the Tour d'Eau family from Marseille in the late 1700's, the building's architectural style is unique in this area; square, with a central courtyard containing the well above the cistern, and four corner lookout turrets. The Italian spelling of the family name became Turdò so the palace is also known as Palazzo Turdò.
We asked current owner and manager of Palazzo Tour d'Eau, Massimo Criscio, to tell us his story. After getting his MBA in the United States and working for a few years in corporate America, Massimo decided to move back to Abruzzo and work on his dream of creating a culinary program and entertaining people with food. He grabbed the opportunity when his father renovated this historical residence and did not know what to do with it. Massimo transformed the palace into an elegant gourmet restaurant open exclusively on weekends and by reservation. The restaurant is the perfect spot for special events like wedding receptions, group meetings, parties and other important occasions. The Palace also offers 6 lovely spacious rooms, neatly decorated in a fresh style with modern comforts, each with a spectacular panoramic view of the Maiella mountain and foothills.
For lunch we tried the Cavatelli alla Ventricina, a very traditional Abruzzo recipe , and the Chitarra ai Funghi Porcini e Tartufo as this area is famous for its truffles and mushrooms. Paired with local wines and topped off with a scrumptious dessert, we certainly recommend this place if you are looking for something off the beaten track, with a twist of sophistication above and beyond the everyday trattoria.Last but not least, if you are looking for a culinary vacation or just cooking classes, Massimo also offers this opportunity to explore Abruzzo from a different prospective.
