Abruzzo Food and Wine Tour 2008Cooking classes and tours ranging from 3 to 7 days. Personalized tours are also available and groups are small. Here, one participant talks about her cooking holiday experience. Meet Cathy Di Santo from San Diego, California, where her great-grandparents settled after emigrating from a mountain village just outside of Rome. Cathy never met her great-grandmother but heard stories about her cooking as a child growing up in a very American family of mixed ethnicity. Intrigued by the charm of Italy since she was young, Cathy always felt a great affinity to her Italian heritage more than any other bloodline in the family, and started trying to perfect her own recipe of spaghetti with meatballs when she was just 12 years old! But since great-grandma didn't really leave much behind in the form of written recipes, Cathy's family lost their connection with genuine Italian cuisine. So when she finally planned a trip to Italy, going deeper into the culinary world was an important priority for her. Cathy chose a cooking holiday at Palazzo Tour D'Eau where she was added to a group of 3 other international travellers. She says that her tour and classes were fun and informative at the same time. She enjoyed the individual attention that she got from the tour guide, and pointed out that the cooking teacher was warm, friendly, professional, and took the "difficult" out of cooking. She also noted that this kind of organized holiday was much more relaxing than travelling on her own would have been, as it took the guesswork out of where to go and how to get there. The palace that her group stayed in was clean and comfortable, not to mention incredibly peaceful due to its location in a tiny hill-top village called Carunchio . Cathy seemed especially impressed by the food she learned to cook and all the fresh flavours she was able to experience. They visited many local villages and towns such as Lanciano, Vasto, Guardiagrele, Pescara, Castelli, Sulmona, Santo Stefano di Sessanio. Out of the variety of places her group visited, her favourites were the traditional Trabocco fishing rig on the Adriatic coast, the historical bell foundry in Agnone in the region of Molise, and the factory where they watched the making of local cheeses. ![]() ![]() ![]() Cathy says she would recommend this tour to anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of every day life, enjoy the lush green countryside and spectacular views, and get a taste of traditional Italian life and cuisine without all the touristic chaos. "This is the best way to explore Abruzzo, doing it through food and wine. We had fantastic Montepulciano". Tours are open in Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
