			<description>During our recent travels in Abruzzo, we were participating at an art show in Pescara. We were most impressed by a young lady with Irish-Italian background and a lot of passion for some special arts. We went ahead and interviewed her:

			<title>The Easter Earthquakes in Abruzzo, 2009</title>
			<link>http://abruzzotoday.com/news/latest/the-easter-earthquakes-in-abruzzo-2009.html</link>
			<description>In Italy, Good Friday is called Venerd&amp;igrave; Santo , meaning Holy Friday. This Holy Friday was not very good, as we ironically buried nearly 300 inhabitants of our beloved land of Abruzzo.
We all have our teary eyes glued to the news on TV, our hearts aching for these fellow countrymen, and our heads just struggling to understand how it is possible that so many people had to lose their lives in this tragic event.

			<title>Eucharistic Miracle in Lanciano</title>
			<link>http://abruzzotoday.com/services/abruzzo-travel-guide/eucharistic-miracle-in-lanciano.html</link>
			<description>

The importance of religion for the past generations is shown by the presence of two sanctuaries in Piazza Plebiscito, which is the most important in town: first of all, the sanctuary of the Eucharistic Miracle in Lanciano, hosting the relics of the first Eucharistic Miracle in Catholic Church. It happened more than twelve centuries ago and is famous both in Italy and abroad; in the pilgrimage itineraries it is included among other important religious destinations like the Vatican and the sanctuaries of Padua, Bari and Assisi. The archaeological excavations confirm that the place of the Miracle always represented &amp;ndash; before and after Christ &amp;ndash; the main location of the spiritual life of the town: there were the ruins of a temple dedicated to Mars and, according to popular legends, a small temple in memory of the martyrdom of Cassius Longinus, the praetorian of Abruzzo origins who shortened Christ&amp;rsquo;s suffering by piercing his side with a spear and miraculously healed from an eye disease in that very moment; then he fled the army, became a deacon and spread the Lord&amp;rsquo;s message.

			<title>Earthquake in Paganica l'Aquila</title>
			<link>http://abruzzotoday.com/services/events-in-abruzzo/earthquake-in-paganica-laquila.html</link>
			<description>

Monday April 8th at 3:00 pm

The earthquake in Abruzzo has been a tragic event. The epicentre was in Paganica in the province of l&amp;rsquo;Aquila. The little villages around it were damaged as well. But the damage was limited to that area. Towns in the provinces of Chieti, Teramo and Pescara were not hit hard. Some people in towns 80 miles away slept through the whole earthquake. The major highways are now open to regular traffic. So far the death count is around 260 and there are many people (around 20,000) that are homeless.

Many people are donating to help these poor people. Many organizations donate to the Red Cross or the Protezione Civile. We would like to endorse the mission of Mario Daniele, who is originally from Abruzzo and is trying to collect some donations and hand them personally to the people in need.

Here is his press release:

Establishing the Abruzzo Disaster Relief Fund

In an effort to raise much needed money to benefit the victims of today&amp;rsquo;s tragic earthquake in central Italy, Mario Daniele, Honorary Vice Consul of Italy, has established the Abruzzo Disaster Relief Fund. Today&amp;rsquo;s report of over 50,000 residents of the Abruzzo region left homeless and over 15,000 structures tagged as unsafe to inhabit, has motivated this effort.

&amp;ldquo;I am urging everyone who is able, especially those Italian-American and Italian-Canadian citizens, to support this effort. 100% of every dollar raised will be given directly to families most in need. The recipients will be selected based on level of need and by local emergency responders in the area&amp;rdquo; says Mario Daniele.

Checks can be made payable to &amp;ldquo;Abruzzo Disaster Relief Fund&amp;rdquo; and sent to:

Abruzzo Disaster Relief Fund
2740 Monroe Avenue
Rochester, NY 14618

To donate via credit or debit card, call 585-271-1111
