The museum of pork, also known as Museo del Maiale, is a new, unique museum (the only one like it in Italy). Here are some of the reasons for its creation and the frenzy around it:
  • The existence of such a museum honours culinary traditions in this area of Abruzzo. Italy, especially Abruzzo, has made great use of pork meat and not much credit has ever been given to it.
  • The museum also exists to attract tourism to a geographical area where products made from pork have been a tradition through the years.
  • In Carpineto, families pride themselves on having combined innovation with tradition, creating jobs in their town around the production of quality pork products like salamis and porchetta. Their innovations lacked a showcase - thus the museum.
In this museum visitors can learn about the history of the pig, starting from back the pig looked a lot more like a wild boar according to drawings from the 13th century. There is also a little history about the town of Carpineto Sinello.

Carpineto is very famous for its artisan production of Ventricina (a local salame made with the best cuts of pork) and porchetta (a whole slow-roasted pig, stuffed with pine nuts, almonds, rosemary and other herbs).
