L’Aquila is the largest province in Abruzzo and it is entirely inland,
with no coastal border. It is a mostly mountainous area, where the
highest mountains in the Apennine range are found – the Gran Sasso,
marking the border between L’Aquila and Teramo, the Maiella on the
border with Chieti, and the Velino-Sirente. The Gran Sasso mountain
boasts the Calderone, the southernmost glacier in Europe. The large
amount of snowfall in these mountains is the source of many rivers like
the Sangro, the Aterno-Pescara, the Turano, the Liri, the Salto, and
numerous springs and waterfalls. There are two natural lakes, one near
Scanno and one near Barrea, as well as a large artificial lake in
Campotosto. In the past, L’Aquila province included one of the largest
lakes in the Italian peninsula, Lake Fucino, a popular spot for ancient
Roman Emperors to go. This lake was finally drained by means of the
third biggest engineering project in the late 19th century (the other 2
being the Eiffel Tower and the Suez Canal). The fertile land that Lake
Fucino left behind is now a flourishing agricultural area, and home to
many industries. The population density in the province is very low
overall, leaving lots of open space for national parks between the
castles and fortified medieval boroughs on hillcrests and mountain
ridges.
Of interest to descendants of Italian emigrants looking
for family history, the province of L’Aquila previously included the
villages of Popoli and Bussi sul Tirino (reallocated to the province of
Pescara in 1927) and other towns that were reallocated to the province
of Rieti in the region of Lazio (Latium): Accumoli, Amatrice,
Antrodoco, Borbona, Borgo Velino, Borgorose (Borgocollefegato),
Cantalice, Castel Sant'Angelo, Cittaducale, Cittareale, Fiamignano,
Leonessa, Lugnano di Villa Troiana, Micigliano, Pescorocchiano,
Petrella Salto, and Posta.
