The name is due to the presence of the ancient fortified centre, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 770 AD, and here is where the five most ancient churches in town used to be. As the churches of San Lorenzo and San Maurizio (the latter was built in the early Christian period, on the ruins of a pagan temple because the saint appeared and saved the local people during the blood-stained siege by the Greek Comitone), the only remains are the tower of the church of San Giovanni and the churches of San Biagio and Sant’Agostino that, together with the medieval workshop (with the writing attributing it to someone called Nicolao), the widening roads and the 15th-century houses, offer a marvellous view of the life lived in ancient times.
