Capracotta Osca
osca capracotta.jpgKnown as “the queen of the Apennines”, this ski resort is famous for cross country skiing and is one of the highest towns in Italy, at 1460 metres above sea level. It stands in the unspoilt setting of the Campo and Capraro mountains. Traces of Samnite walls and fortifications can still be seen on Mount Cavallerizzo, in the Fonte del Romito district. The famous bronze tablet bearing the Oscan inscription was discovered here in 1848. It dates back to the 2nd century B.C. and contains a description of cults in honour of Ceres, and a kind of calendar of festivals dedicated to agricultural divinities.
