In Palena, there is the Museo Geopaleontologico (Geopalaeontoligical museum), which hosts fossils of fish and, above all, the prolagus, a small mammal dating back to the Miocene and ancestor of the Leporidae family. In the same area, the MOM illustrates the life and habits of the Marsican Brown Bear, whose natural habitat is the incredibly magic atmosphere of the caves of the Maiella. The museum – hosted inside the former convent of S. Antonio – is divided into 5 sections. The entrance features a very realistic reproduction of a forest by night. The first section is dedicated to images of the Marsican brown bear with reference to the cartoons that have often taken inspiration from this peaceful mammal for their characters. The second section features the skeleton of the cave-dwelling bear, a species that is now extinct and that was called that way because it used to live inside the caves. The third section is dedicated to the world of bear, how they live and what they eat; while the last sections are dedicated to the decline of bears – critically endangered – and to the projects for its protection, respectively.
