Roccavivara – Santa Maria del Canneto
canneto.jpg The remains of a Roman country villa can be visited on the right-hand banks of the river Trigno, next to the beautiful Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria del Canneto. The residential part of the complex preserves three rooms paved with priceless polychrome mosaics from the 3rd century B.C., depicting geometric and figurative mosaics, with birds, flowers and plants. The working part (pars rustica) is divided up into several sections, designed to store and process crops. It is still possible to see the wine cellar, with around 50 dolia (large jars stored in the ground, designed to contain wine and oil, like the nearby tanks), the pressing room and the furnace for pottery production.
What to do and what to see in Molise.
