Vastogirardi Italic temple
vastogirardi.jpgThe ruins of a Samnite sanctuary, possibly dedicated to Hercules, stand on the slopes of Mount Capraro, not far from the mediaeval village of Vastogirardi. The mediaeval church of Sant’Angelo was built on the remains of the holy building. Sant'Angelo inherited his pastoral vocation from the ancient pagan divinity, often superimposing his cult. The Italic temple, surrounded by a portico and protected by a polygonal masonry enclosure, stands on a tall podium, with central steps, 4-column pronaos at the front and a single cella. It stands in a natural setting of great beauty.
