transumanza_middle.jpgThis year historians have gathered together with sheepherders and scientists to reconstruct one of the most significant events in Abruzzo's history, the Transumanza. Each year, sheepherders used to lead their sheep along paths that lead from the mountains down to warmer lands along the seaside, stopping at churches for refuge, and creating many economic connections on the way.

Starts on September 29, 2007
Ends on October 7, 2007

Where: Castel del Monte (AQ) to Foggia (region of Puglia)

For the Transumanza, sheepherders traditionally set out on September 29th, a day dedicated to the guardian Saint Michele the Archangel. On the eve before the departure, a traditional pastoral dinner will be held, where the leader of the group will be presented his walking stick, and the mayor of Castel del Monte will present the Finnish photographer Tehri Paavola with a silver walking stick as a thanks for his participation. The next day (September 29) the group will start their journey in front of the Basilica Santa Maria di Collemaggio with their herd of sheep.

The name of this event (Tracturo 3000) was chosen because "Tracturo" is an antique word for "Tratturo" (the route along which the Transumanza takes place), while 3000 speaks of looking toward the future. The association in charge of reviving this valuable historical event hopes to create a connection with the past that carries on into the future, especially for the education of younger generations.

This particular "Tratturo" route is historically the longest and most important in Europe, at 244 km (152 miles) it extends from the Province of L'Aquila in the Region of Abruzzo to the Province of Foggia in the Region of Puglia (also known as Apulia).

abruzzotoday.com editors have tried (unsuccessfully) to contact the organizers of this event, in order to obtain more info on the whereabouts of the group on their journey. If there is anymore news, it will be published here without hesitation! If not, hopefully next year there will be more information available to the public.
