Population: 1500 Elevation: 1000 This town is situated on the layers of the Sirente mountain and dominates the Marsica subregion. In the high middle ages and it was known as Castrum Agelli. Today the the town has preserved some some medieval structures of certain interest. The town, placed on a hill that overlooks the plain of Fucino has a ruined castle, erected for Ruggero, count of Celano, in 1356. Of the construction there remains only today an outside circular tower and an octagonal internal tower. Not much has survived from the first phase of the building of the church of the trinity; of which there remains a gate that dates from 1479 and the coat of arms of the crusade of Piccolomini. On the inside is a processional cross, a work of a goldsmith of the Sulmona school of the early Renaisssance. Not far away is the church if St. Rocco from the 16th century. Near the train station is the beautiful church of St. Adolf, built in the 1930s under the direction of the sculptor Arturo Dazzi. Upon the top of the town, on the summit of Mount Secino, there are the remains of a wall constructed by the pre-Roman tribal people known as the Italics, whom Italy is named after. August: Festival of the Amaretti |
