HISTORICAL FACTS
The lake, created with a barrage in 1952 submerged, in relation of the ancient path in the plan of the cattle-track, the ruins of the Benedectine abbey of St Angelo of Bareggio of the 7th century.
The removal of fertile agricultural land and of pastures was compensated by the production of electrical energy and by the tourism; indeed the lake is destination of many migratory birds like the royal wild duck, the loon, the dabchick, the coot, the sandpiper.
The ancient medieval hamlet has on the bottom a fortified building called a 'studio', an ancient place of meditation for the monks of the valley, built by the Benedictine monk Padre Azzone in 1081, after the raid of the Saracens.
In the highest part of the town one can find a castle from the 12th century.
In 1496 the fief was ceded to the D'Albico family.
The town, believed to be impregnable, was closed by two defensive doors.
A very ancient necropolis was discovered on the banks of the lake, testifying to the Samnite (a pre-Roman tribal people who lived throughout central and southern Italy and who were later absorbed into the Roman Empire) origins of the town.
