Bussi sul Tirino is located on the southern border of the national park "Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga", in one of the largest valleys in Italy, on the banks of the Tirino river known as the clearest river in Italy. The town owes its history to its location on the river, and also its more recent industrial growth. A multinational company founded a chlorine plant here in 1902, which later became the Società Italiana di Elettrochimica. Unfortunately, there are many debates about the toxic waste that comes from this plant.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION:
Bussi sul Tirino was founded as a country retreat village belonging to the Roman Empire, and the name most likely comes from the abundance of the Bosso (box tree) plant, Buxum in Latin, originally Busci in Roman times, and now Bussi. The earliest mention of the town dates back to 1092 when part of the Bussi castle was owned by the San Benedetto in Perillis monastery. The Benedictine and Celestine orders of monks were attracted to the area and built the church Santa Maria di Cartignano. Ownership of the town passed through many hands, including the Cantelmo family from Popoli, Pietropaoli from Navelli, and then to the duke Cosimo dei Medici from Tuscany. In 1743 the town became part of the Reign of the two Sicilies, and then in 1806 part of the kingdom of Naples where feudality was abolished.

In 1880 the name of the town changed from just Bussi to "Bussi sul Tirino". It was part of the province of L'Aquila until 1927 when the province of Pescara was created.
