POPULATION 440 ELEVATION 520 mt On the inside of the Velino-Sirente park, the town bases its economy on agriculture. In the vicinity are numerous archaeological findings from the pre-Roman era that are in the process of being discovered. Dominating the view from afar of the town is a quadrangular tower probably used as a watch tower in the 15th century. HISTORICAL FACTS In antiquity the hamlet was known as Castel Ilari. The archaeological findings of the Roman age attest to the area being inhabited already in the ancient period. In ancient times it was also known as Castel Perio and Castel Iesio before being called Castel Ilari. In the 18th century it was a fief of the Barberini and until the middle 19th century it was part of the town of Goriano Sicoli. WHAT TO SEE The church of the Assunta built in 1555 has a beautiful Renaissance portal. The newly built Abruzzo Museum of Graphic Arts is dedicated to showcasing 19th century artists in particular. The square tower, built by the Normans in the middle ages, is worth visiting as well due to its unusual type of plinth construction.
