Located beneath a rocky spur, where ruins of an old castle testify to its noble origins, the town looks over the vast plain that today accomodates numerous industrial and artisan areas.

HISTORICAL FACTS
Founded by the counts of Sangro around the year 1000, the town has witnessed the passage of notable historical people like Carlo Martello (1292), Celestino V (1294), and Bernardino da Siena (1410).
Certainly Castel Di Sangro has much distant origins as affirmed by Balzano that even directly dates back the antiquity of the Samnites.
In the 13th century the town was destroyed by the army of the Pope.
More destruction in the form of earthquakes and more recently from German bombs in the second world war, therefore the town contains few ancient buildings or monuments (the 9th century castle, for example, is mostly in ruins though part of a watchtower still stands).
Castel Di Sangro was the birthplace of Teofilo Patini (1840-1905), the painter that perhaps best interpreted the hard life of the peasants  and shepherds of the Abruzzo.

*The local calcio (soccer) team, Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Castel di Sangro, once achieved great fame in Italy when they participated in the Serie B league (second highest league in the calcio hierarchy) for two seasonsl in 1996-97 and 197-98. This was notable because it was the first time that a team with as few as 5000 inhabitants played in Serie B.

WHAT TO SEE
The Assunta Collegiate is a basilica in the baroque style that was rebuilt at the turn of the 18th century, as ordered by Alfonso of Aragon.
The site of this basilica was once the place of an ancient church, and it currently contains 18th century paintings.
The Aufidenate Museum contains works of art from the 16th century Maddalena convent, as this cloisters of this building have been renovated.

In any case, the town still contains some ancient things; valuable works of art like the church of the Annunziata, the church of Santa Maria Assunta, with a baroque façade by Bernardino Ferradini, and on the inside are remarkable works of art.
