Castelvecchio Subequo is the principal center of the Subequana valley, it is found in an area of great archaeological ruins that attest to its being inhabited even in pre-Roman times.
Immersed in the greenness of the valley, the town still has in its buildings some medieval houses.

HISTORICAL FACTS
The hamlet had great vitality in the middle ages when it had a Roman city-hall and was known as Superaequum.

WHAT TO SEE
The church of S. Francesco, founded in 1288 and expanded in 1647, conserves in its interior valuable Baroque fresoces of G.B. Gianni and various altars of the 16th and 17th centuries.
Particularly significant is the high altar with a ciborium in the form of a small temple, richly engraved in walnut wood.
The Museum of Religious Art, located in the church of S. Francesco, contains medieval works of art and pieces of valuable artwork that were donated by the Counts of Celano.
Some of the oldest evidence of Christianity in Abruzzo are to be found in the catacombs at Colle Moro, which date back to the late 4th century AD.
