It’s mountain town that is a little secluded. Many years agao it was more populated, but like all other towns in this area, people had to migrate.
Historical facts:The name of this town comes from the founder, Messer Marino Caracciolo. This old medieval town was known for stone artisan work. Like the majority of this mediaval town, it was built in the 1200s. It was then part of the Caracciolo family that ruled the town for many years to come. A tribute to their work is evident on the portal of the main church in town. A local tradition is the ‘ndorcia which a burning of dry long collected branches. The time of this traditional moment is on the 24th of December, in the afternoon. Then every family, has a little bonfire, in front of their house to warm up the new Jesus born. WHAT TO SEE AND DO:In Castiglione there is a new museum called Museo della Tradizioni Familiari. It means the museum of the Family Traditions. In this museum you can find a few items of the older days, such as old irons, closets to preserve corn and wheat, tools used to sift wheat grains and more. The latest addition to Castiglione is the new ice skating rink that is open especially in the winter.
