POPULATION 11300 ELEVATION 800 mt Celano is the most important center of the Marsica region after Avezzano. Agriculture is the principal activity of the inhabitants that also boasts a sugar plant. In the numerous zones there are also small businesses. HISTORICAL FACTS The historical part is grouped under the majestic castle that can be found sheltered on the first layers of Monte Velino. The name of this town derives from Cliternum, the ancient fair city. In the 9th century it became the capital of the Marsica area. Like all the towns of the Marsica, Celano was practically destroyed by the earthquake of 1915. Placed on a high ground that once dominated the Fucino lake, it was characterized as a town by the magnificent belltower of the castle that was built in 1392 by Pietro da Celano and in the 14th century was finished by Antonio Piccolomini. WHAT TO SEE The Celano Castle consists of a quadrangular plan with four fortified angular towers, and is encircled all around by an enclosed wall from an irregular perimeter, spaced out of cylindrical keeps. On the inside is a great interior courtyard with porticos that have high, sharp arces and a loggia on the highest floor with decorated capitals of the banner of the Piccolomini. In the rooms is housed the Museo di Arte Sacra della Marsica. Located near the shores of the ancient Fucino lake, the Abruzzo Prehistory Museum is home to many archaeological findings from the Paludi site, once a place of human settlement in the third millenium BC until the Bronze Age. The church of Sant'Angelo is known for its stucco work done in the 18th century. Also worth seeing is the Romanesque portale of the church of San Francesco.
