HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Francavilla al Mare is known to be a seaside resort town since the 1870s. But earlier, in the late 1200s it was known to be a port town, according to some documentations. At the begining of the 1500s, it became a fued of the D'Avalos family. It had to endure many invasions and one of the hardest was the one by the Turks in 1956. During the second world war, it was the battle field between the allied forces (Americans and English) and the Germans and it was almost entirely destroyed. After a reconstruction the modern town spread along the coast.

WHAT TO SEE
The convent that belonged to the Francesco Paolo Michetti (1851 - 1921), which hosted artists and other important people of the cultural scene of this era, is worth seeing. Nearby is Palazzo San Domenico, which formerly housed the city hall and a Domincan convent of the 17th century. The palazzo hosts the Museo Michetti featuring: Gli storpi and la processione delle Serpi. These are paintings on canvas done by Michetti and inspired by the Abruzzo processions and festivals. Another spot not to miss is the is the Parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which features a gilded silver Monstrance by Nicola da Guardiagrele and sulptures and bas-reliefs by Andrea Pietro Cascella, which is another important Abruzzese artist that made history.
Many beatiful beaches here in Francavilla. Anybody can rent an umbrella with a beach chair, even for a single day. In August it's going to be a little hard. Booking in advanced is adviced.
