Elevation: 675 meters Population: 450 The hilltop village of Guilmi is located in the vicinities of Vasto. It is surrounded by oak trees and it is facing the Frentani hills and the Sinello river. HISTORICAL FACTS The first mentions of this town was in the 11th century when it was under the jurisdiction of the Monastery of San Stefano. It is written that the church of San Marco was donated to Monastery by Trasmondo II, count of Chieti. Eventually, being so close to Vasto, during the feudal period, in the 1300s it was passed on to the D’Avalos family. It has a definite medieval feel with narrow streets, fortified with walls and long stairways. WHAT TO SEE -Church of the Immaculate Conception, baroque style, with a great looking wooden organ. Very similar design of the San Buono Church. - San Marco church - Palazzo Lizzi VENTRICINA BATTLE The Vasto area has many little villages. All these mountain top hamlets make a wonderful salami called Ventricina. Every town brags about its own way of doing it. There are 2 major sides: Ventricina del Vastese and Guilmi. Accademia della Ventricina is an association that is trying to have the same recipe and trying to certify the product and making it mainstream. While Guilmi has its own recipe and they do not want to be associated with them. All the little mountaintop towns have their own artisan ventricina. It seems like that the Accademia is trying to make the product mainstream and also trying to get the majority of the sales thanks to the visibility of the association/consortium. Our suggestion is to buy the Ventricina from the local butchers, therefore giving support to the local producers.
