Molina Aterno is located in the Aterno valley near the gole of San Venanzio. The town is situated in a very rough landscape, full of rocks and poky kind of vegetation but very appealing. Typical scenary of the province of l’Aquila little villages.
HISTORICAL FACTS
The hamlet was developed greatly during the medieval times thanks to its strategic position. The town basically worked as an entrance door to the valley Subequana. It was like a customs gate.
The origin of the name was from the very first feudal family that was introduced: Rainaldo di Molino.
WHAT TO SEE
- Palazzo Piccolomini that was once a medieval castle. On the right bank of the Aterno river and the majestic Sirente river, near the gole of San Venazio.
- Church of San Nicola, with its 15th century bell tower
- Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which has an important artistic and architectural value
- Grotta di Vallerendola, which is a cave used as a place to hide and live for a short period of time by the local bandits.
