ELEVATION 750 meters POPULATION 5000 Pescina bases its economy on agriculture and is well-known above all as birthplace of two important historical characters, the cardinal Mazzarino in the 18th century, and on 1st May 1900 the writer Ignazio Silone was born here: today Pescina dedicates to him an important literary price.Coming from the eastern side, Pescina is the first small town in the Marsica area, situated between the mountain and the Giovenco river. HISTORICAL FACTS Pescina was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1900. This centre lived its best development during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and in the 16th century it had its own episcopate WHAT TO SEE There is a fraction of the town called Venere and a watchtower is its most important monument. The cathedral of St. Antonio, completed in the late 16th century is worth a visit.
