Pescocostanzo is one of the most beautiful and picturesque hamlet in Abruzzo. It gets all the press because of the architectural beauty and the central positioning in the Abruzzo National Park. If you are looking for a green landscape in the summer and great skiing in the winter, this is the place. It is located in the slopes of Monte Calvario. The historic center is in excellent conditions and boasting numerous examples of civil and religious architecture.
HISTORICAL FACTS
The former name of this town was Pesculum Costantii and it was founded in the middle ages. Famous now but also in the past was the artisan handicraft that was available in town.
WHAT TO SEE
- Church of Gesù e Maria and its convent, designed by Cosimo Fanzago, in the 17th century.
- Palazzo Sabatini, near via Colecchi. Named after teh famous physician Gaetano Sabatini(1869)
- Collegiae of Santa Maria del Colle, built in the 15th century and it contains Rennaisance and Baroque furnishings.
- Church Santa Maria del Suffragio dei Morti, built in the 15th century with a wooden altar sculpted by Palmerio Grasso in 1647.
- Fontana Maggiore, a fountain decorated with tritons and horses’ heads.
- Palazzo Mosca, worked as a workshop for famous woodcarvers
- Palazzo Ricciardelli
- Palazzo Colecchi, Abruzzo baroque style
- Palazzo Cocco, built in the 18th century
- Palazzo Grilli
- Church of San Giovanni Battista, now home of the Musuem of the Origins, illustrating the history of the town of sheep farming.
- Casa d’Amata, represents the typical Abruzzo “postcard” style with the “vignale” which is the external staircase and an iron rail.
- Hermitage of San Michel, located on the shepherd’s track going towards Campo di Giove
