The village of Prata d’Ansidonia, also known as “Prata” is popular spot because of its closeness to the Peltuinum archaeological site. Thanks to the finding of the ruins of the ancient Vestini hamlet, many tourists come and visit this area. Prata d’Ansidonia is a typical village of L’aquila basin and it still remained intact, preserving its shape and traditions.
HISTORICAL FACTS
The name of this town kept changing, from Peltuinim then during the middle ages it switched to
Civita Sidonia (Sidonia Town) before being destroyed by the Francs.
WHAT TO SEE
- Parish church of St. Nicola, rebuilt during the Baroque period a valuable ambo is preserved of 1240, coming from the church of St. Paolo in Peltuinum.
- Archaeological area of Peltuinum, along the ancient Tratturo (shepherd’s track), with the ruins of great town walls, of the 1st century BC.
- Church of San Paolo was built among the ruins of this ancient settlement, during the Early Middle ages, with recycling materials of the Roman ruins. Then this religious structure was rebuilt in the 13th. Inside the church, one can find two Roman columns with capitals and engraved stones, dating back to the 8th century.
- In the hamlet Castel Camponeschi rise the ruins of the fortified stronghold, dating back to the 13th century, inhabited until 1960’s.
- Saffron growing, of which the whole pistils are used in the local gastronomy, that together with truffles are the best and most expensive ingredients for local cuisine
