Elevation: 470Population: 1,075 San Buono is located in the vicinities of Vasto (about 30 kms), up in the hills immersed in the greens of the wild forest. HISTORICAL FACTS This hamlet seems to have a very rich historical background. The legend says that it goes way back to the 4th century and some archeological findings certify the truth about it. The recovery of some graves recently found that Italics were present in this area. Inside the graves, some jewelry was found that can certify the origin of the time. All the archeological findings are available at the museum of San Buono, next to the Convent. The first mentions in documents come from the 10th century, where it was certified that the Castle of Santo Bono was erected. The name San Buono comes originally from the older name Castrum Bonum. But also there is another story about it. A Christian martyr that was killed hundreds of years ago, had written on the tombstone: “Qui giace un uomo buono, i.e. Here lays a good man”. So when they proclaimed him saint, they called him San Buono. In the 16th century, a high ranked clergy figure, decided to ship body of the Saint to Castrum Bonum and therefore they called it San Buono from that day. During the feudal times, San Buono was ruled by the Grandinato family and then by the Caracciolo. As a matter of fact, Marino Caracciolo IV, built the convent of San Antonio that now hosts the museum of Art and Archeology.
