Altitude 1172 metersPopulation 1730 City hall phone number: 0873 979366 Historical information The Schiavi d’Abruzzo area, east of the confluence of the Sente into the Trigno, a river which comprises the natural and administrative boundary with Molise, covers 45.28 km_ and reaches its highest point on the peak of Mount Pizzuto (1290 m). It has a typically mountainous morphology, varying from 600 to 1200 metres above sea level. The area is still characterised by small, sparse settlements, based on the ancient pagus / vicus system used by the Italic populations that settled in the Apennine/Adriatic districts of the peninsula. Schiavi’s old town still resembles a hill settlement (1172 m), which is naturally fortified and centred around the mother church of San Maurizio. The boundaries of the mediaeval settlement, defended to the north by a small fort that has now been encompassed into modern structures, remained more or less unchanged until the second half of the 19th century, when the town began to expand downhill.
