Villafonsina is small town between Vasto and Lanciano.

HISTORICAL FACTS
Villalfonsina’s origin are uncertain. Some sources say that the hamlet was founded in the 16th century by the feudal leader Alfonso Caracciolo, prince of San Buono and Baron of Casalbordino. Some other source says that the founders of this village were “Schiavoni”, which slaves and refugees running away from the Saracens. Their origins were from Balkans and they approached the area by 3 small, banged up boats on the river Osento. These refuges were looking for a more hospitable area from where they came from. At that time, the land was owned by the feudal family of Vasto, the Marquis D’Avalos. He let the refugees stay in the area and gave them work. Many more kept coming from the same area and they built a church in the 17th century, with a cupola and a bell tower. Villalfosina was later part of county of Monteodorisio, until 1811.
